The PRP has developed a proposal for an ‘Emergency Package for Tropical Forests’. Financed by an innovative public-private partnership in developed countries, it would achieve a significant, near-term reduction in tropical deforestation by helping rainforest countries embark on alternative, low-carbon development paths. On 1st April 2009, at an historic meeting of world leaders (including Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Nicolas Sarkozy and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton) hosted by The Prince of Wales in St James’s Palace, it was agreed that an inter-governmental Working Group would be formed to study these proposals and to decide on a course of action prior to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December 2009.
The public awareness campaign was launched on May 5th 2009 with the objective of improving public awareness of the link between deforestation and climate change, and therefore the need for urgent action to tackle it.
